Homemade Volcano

This morning we began with our letter V by reading a story about Volcanoes!
The Magic School Bus Blows Its Top A Book About Volcanoes
by: Gail Herman
They loved the story of how the school children traveled with their teacher in a magic school bus deep in the ocean to discover how volcanoes are born.

So on with a science experiment!
They could hardly contain their selves when I said we were going to build a miniature volcano.

I found this over at Pocketful of Posies and knew they would love it!

Homemade Volcano:
3 drops dishwashing liquid
1/2 cup water
3 drops red food coloring
4 Tbsp. baking soda
1/2 cup vinegar (Last) the vinegar causes it to explode

funnel
large pan
plastic or glass bottle
play dough to decorate bottle (optional)

Mix all ingredients in bottle using a funnel, except vinegar. After, add vinegar and watch it explode!

Here's our first picture adding play dough

Here's our explosion!
Super cool!

And they didn't like the smell of vinegar!

They loved it so much we had to do it twice!

We're also reading a Magic School Bus book this week - The Magic School Bus Plants a Seed. Those are great books.

I'm so glad the kids enjoyed the volcano. I need to do it again with my kids. Great ideas!
